Sarthika
Sartika lived with her sister’s family since she was 8 years old. She was sold by her sister and her brother into a brothel when she was 12 years old. Given the young age she entered the trade, she fell into addictions. She was rescued in 2012 and was kept in a shelter home in Kolkata.
Sartika joined Ruhamah designs on 18 March 2014. She was one of our first employees. At Ruhamah she learned to create jewelry and also began learning to read and write Bengali. The staff in the workshop can testify to her steady growth emotionally, which was seen in her relationships with her supervisors and peers. She grew in confidence and was bold to lead girls gently and by example.
She has also been improving in English language skills which are taught to the girls by the social workers. With counseling and life skill coaching, Sartika who was earlier unable to take correction is able to accept her shortcomings and makes the effort to change. Even though she hasn’t learnt a lot, she put in lots of effort to reach where she is. In 2016, for the first time after she was trafficked and rescued, she met her family, and they look up to her. In 2017, she became a supervisor. She is eager to learn to read and write Bengali, her mother tongue and she is funding this by herself. She trains the other employees in Aari embroidery. She is indeed a role model for the other employees.
